One Morning

One Morning with Dana

Dana is the lucky winner of a "One Morning" session with me via the Fairfield County Mom's Blog. So it's really quite appropriate that she's a writer, and an artist, and a loving mom of a 3-month old baby boy. She and her son, Troy, usually enjoy their mornings together as her husband is typically at work pretty early (he's an orthopedic PA at Yale New Haven Hospital).

As their usual routine goes, Dana and her baby boy were still snuggling in bed when I arrived. We made sure to capture a few of those sweet moments before Troy got a diaper change and a fresh new outfit. Dana then made herself some coffee (a must) and some eggs for breakfast, ate at mom-speed (you know what I'm talking about), and spent the rest of the time playing with and entertaining her adorable little boy (keeping a baby happy is a full time job!). She sets up play areas in several rooms in the house so she doesn't feel like she's stuck in one place the whole day (so brilliant!) and usually goes for a walk around the neighborhood to get some fresh air. Apparently we had such a good time that Troy fell soundly asleep in his Mama's arms right after the stroll. Above all, it was such a pleasure meeting Dana and learning all about her morning! I am so grateful for getting to know all the wonderful Moms as part of this project and for getting a little peek into their lives.

One Morning with Maria (Stamford, CT)

“One Morning” is a documentary photography project done in partnership with Fairfield County Mom’s Blog. It is a rare an intimate peek into the everyday lives of moms, one morning at a time.

Maria was my last "One Morning" mom. It was quite fitting, I thought, that she was also the closest (it took me exactly 10 minutes to reach her house). She is also going through a situation I am quite familiar with. She is home on maternity leave, taking care of her new baby and her older son. Two boys. I know something about that. :)

We started early (6:15am), because if Maria wants any hope of eating breakfast, she needs to do it before the kids wake up (her hubby is out the door super early for work). The baby was, of course, awake shortly after. Baby snuggles and nursing took place... followed by Michael screaming "Mom!!" from his bedroom to indicate that he was awake. That's when the juggling began. Michael played with Legos, got his breakfast and a lot of encouragement to actually eat it. His baby brother alternated between nursing and napping (typical). And eventually the whole family got fed, dressed, and made plans for the day. We finished two hours after we started, with some fun shots of Michael playing in the back yard, and Maria video-taping him with her phone (which is something she does all the time). Two amazing little boys and a mother who definitely does her best to take care of them.. I feel ever so grateful to have met them.

One Morning with Aarika (Trumbull, CT)

“One Morning” is a documentary photography project done in partnership with Fairfield County Mom’s Blog. It is a rare an intimate peek into the everyday lives of moms, one morning at a time.

My morning with Aarika lasted exactly 45 minutes. By all means, it was the shortest time I spent photographing a mom for this project. It turns out that Aarika has a job that she has to get to (hopefully before I-95 turns into a parking lot), so things like having a leisurely breakfast are not exactly a priority. Which is really surprising, because Aarika happened to be making the most delicious-looking breakfast when I arrived, at 6:15am. Pancakes!

Aarika’s daughter Emmy woke up shortly after the pancakes came off the pan. Emmy followed her mom's lead and quickly got changed, dressed for the day, and joined Aarika in the bathroom to properly style her hair for the day. Everyone's lunch was put together and before I knew it, the whole family was ready to head out to their respective engagements. Mom to work and Emmy with Dad to daycare. 7am on the dot. It was pretty impressive!

One Morning with Vera (Southport, CT)

“One Morning” is a documentary photography project done in partnership with Fairfield County Mom’s Blog. It is a rare an intimate peek into the everyday lives of moms, one morning at a time.

Vera lives in a gorgeous home in Southport Connecticut. I say it’s pretty fitting for her beautiful family! The interior is painted in the most lovely wall colors (that they picked themselves) and filled with stylish coordinating furniture and accessories that bring everything together. I’m telling you all this because I’m slightly obsessed with houses and interior decorating (especially homes of people who have kids!). And when I complimented Vera on her home, she laughed and told me that her husband will be happy to hear that. Apparently he’s the who does all the interior decorating!

Both Vera and her husband work outside the home, so our morning was spent getting everyone ready for the day. She made the most amazing breakfast for the family as Dad made the bed, and then helped wake up their daughter, Lena. He also did the diaper change.. lucky Dad! One amazing breakfast later, he was on his way to the train station on his bicycle, while Vera took care of Lena’s hair, got lunch together, got dressed, and even had a few minutes for play before it was time to go. The morning was certainly busy, but I was amazed that there also wasn’t any hectic rushing. Vera and her hubby obviously have the whole ‘getting ready’ thing down.. they each have their own specific tasks to take care of and it’s a smooth-running process as a result. The photos give a glimpse of this extremely well put together family, and definitely check out Vera’s writing to get to know her a bit!

One Morning with Amy (Westport, CT)

“One Morning” is a documentary photography project done in partnership with Fairfield County Mom’s Blog. It is a rare an intimate peek into the everyday lives of moms, one morning at a time.

Amy is a mother of two boys. Two adorable little men that are super lucky to have such a great mom and dad taking care of them every day. On the morning of our photoshoot, Amy and her hubby were getting the boys ready for a trip to the Zoo…

Like me, Amy appreciates some good lazy time in bed snuggling with a quickly-growing little baby, who will be one in October. His brother usually sleeps in, but I’m guessing all the fun we were having woke him up a bit early. A bit of reading and playing with toys followed.. and the family headed downstairs to prepare breakfast. This is when I discovered that the baby will pretty much eat anything (and a lot of it), while the big boy gets delicious waffles with jam! Oh and the family also enjoys some awesome music while they work in the kitchen (there might have been some disagreement over the choice of tunes, however). Getting ready is of course never easy with two kids (especially since Dad made his exit for work right after breakfast). There was some couch cushion pretend play, sunscreen avoidance, and teeth-brushing before Amy was able to corral and dress everyone for the Zoo. Not to be outdone, big brother also took a trip down the driveway, because, hey, why not, right? We captured so many fun images of Amy’s morning that it was incredibly difficult narrowing down the ones to include in this post.. but I did it, and here they are.

One Morning with Shannon (Monroe, CT)

“One Morning” is a documentary photography project done in partnership with Fairfield County Mom’s Blog. It is a rare an intimate peek into the everyday lives of moms, one morning at a time.

Shannon's "One Morning" session was very different from all the previous ones I've photographed simply because her kids are much older. They are past the toddler stage and fully understand the weight of the situation. A photographer is documenting their morning. That's both strange and fascinating for a little child!

Nevertheless, Shannon and her kids were little troopers getting ready for a fun day out on the town (you have to fully enjoy the summer vacation, right?). I loved watching the elaborate breakfast preparation by Mom, the careful chocolate-chip pancake decoration by big sis, the slow eating process by little brother, oh, and all the other super-special things that make their family's morning routine totally unique. But mostly, the kids playing together and having fun as a family gives me some hope for siblings everywhere...

One Morning with Keira (Norwalk, CT)

“One Morning” is a documentary photography project done in partnership with Fairfield County Mom’s Blog. It is a rare an intimate peek into the everyday lives of moms, one morning at a time.

Photographing Keira's morning was really fun! We got to spend some time together while she made breakfast, since her daughter is old enough to actually sleep in, and enjoyed a morning filled with Sesame Street characters and books.

Keira's adorable little girl absolutely LOVES Sesame Street, and Cookie Monster in particular. She has several Cookie Monster toys (some keeping her company while she sleeps) and carries them everywhere while saying "Coooookie!". Being able to observe and photograph her was just the best experience. And I think you can probably tell how much she and Mom have fun together from these pictures!
