Favorite Books From My 2022 Reading List

One of my most consistent routines is spending about 30 minutes in the morning reading (currently by the fire) with my cup of tea. It’s a ritual that started back in 2019 when I made a goal to read 60 books in one year (I then surpassed that goal in 2020 by reading 100 books, at which point I stopped focusing on counting and started to simply enjoy the process). I often delve into specific subjects, reading a few (or a lot) of books about the same subject matter—like how to take care of our new rescue dog—and get 99% of my books from the amazing local library and sometimes the surrounding towns as well.

Some of my favorite subjects are business, time management, money management, memoirs, spiritual topics, and engrossing fiction for my before-bed evening reads. This year, however, I also dove into autism as my youngest got diagnosed during his triennial evaluation at elementary school. As with dog training books, I found several different perspectives. My favorite points of view definitely tended to be voiced by autistic individuals themselves vs by people who only treat them. And as a parent of an autistic child, it’s important to know how to discern which advice is worth listening to! Some books conveniently omitted certain points that other authors strongly mentioned as warnings, especially when it comes to understanding how a person on the spectrum absorbs the different inputs out in the world.

The books below are ones I enjoyed most this year and feel are worth reading (I didn’t list any of the dozen or so dog training books I read because after having a dog for almost a year I can tell you that working with your dog’s personality is going to be way more useful than any book) and they’re books I was truly engrossed in. One standout was Four Thousand Weeks, which is finally a book that takes the fact that we’re human into account when recommending time management techniques, but most of all, reading is simply amazing and I do highly recommend it!

And if you read a wonderful book this year, please leave a comment so I can add it to my list as well!
